Climate change is not felt equally. Lower & Moderate Income (LMI), often communities of color, tend to be the least prepared for climate disasters, while contributing the least to climate change. The same people are also more susceptible to the climate pollution - greenhouse gas emissions - that cause climate change, and are less likely to have access to the healthy food, low-carbon transit, green neighborhoods, and affordable renewable energy that all should enjoy.
This panel discussion will explore how these dynamics play out in Jersey City and surrounding communities, and discuss policies and initiatives that can address climate change, climate pollution, and equity head-on.
Our meeting will feature 4-5 panelists that will present on a range of topics, including the following:
- "What is Equity" and how it pertains to Jersey City's recent Climate Action Plan process;
- A dive into Air Quality and Socioeconomic Inequality within Jersey City;
- NJ’s new Community Solar initiative which targets the LMI population.
Guest Speakers: Kim Gaddy / Clean Water Action, Rosy George / SJC GIS Specialist, Amanda Colombo / PowerMarket, and Hannah Kendig and Melanie Segal ofThe Climate Mobilization - North Jersey
Moderator: Amanda Novello / SJC Community Sustainability Curriculum Lead
