Green Infrastructure (GI) is an alternate method of solving urban land planning challenges by using nature instead of hard materials. This cost effective method encompasses stormwater management, less heat stress, food production, better air quality, cleaner water and soils, and sustainable energy production. Specific examples for stormwater management include Rain Gardens & Bioswales, Rain Barrels & Permeable Pavement, Trees and Understory Plantings, Green Roofs & Walls.

This evening we will update you on SJC GI Team activities and present you opportunities to get more involved and support the new focus on GI the City of Jersey City has in helping to solve stormwater management issues.

We will hear from 3 speakers:

Mo Kinberg / Community Outreach Manager for NJ Future (Jersey Water Works & Sewage Free NJ) who will update us on JC municipal activities as they prepare their Long Term Control Plan. This stormwater management initiative in JC is gong to cost ratepayers a lot of money and NJ DEP has mandated that a robust community outreach program to support the decision making process when choosing alternative remedies be conducted. SJC is participating in this community outreach process and our goal is for you to leave understanding what the municpal process is going to entail to remedy CSO’s and flooding issues, and that you support the choice of more Green Infrastructure in Jersey City to help remedy these issues..

Jesse Lowe / SJC member and NJCU GIS Specialist, will present the results of a collaborative project he has been working on with SJC and advisor NYC Soil & Water Conservation District for the last two years called the JC Open Sewer Atlas which has been design to create community understanding of JC’s very complex stormwater management sewer system and opportunities to intervene in that system with Green Infrastructure strategies that can lower the cost to remedy stormwater management issues.

Denise Bailey / SJC Project Lead and Co-founder of ‘Friends of the Walkway’, will discuss the debacle at the Society Hill Walkway where 84 mature trees were cut down unnecessarily. Her goal is to inform you of the facts and to seek collaborators to work on closing loopholes in the JC Tree Ordinance & JC Forestry Standards and to work on launch of a JC Tree Commission. A JC Tree Commission ordinance was passed several years ago but to date has not been constituted. We don’t ever want what happened at Society Hill to happen again and dedicated oversight to build and restore the JC Tree Canopy is needed asap.
