Community Crowd-Resourcing For Your Projects !!

The Citizenry of Jersey City generates the CHANGES THEY  WANT TO SEE for their neighborhoods !! SJC's partnership with ioby.org is a support system for making things happen.  This crowd-resourcing platform brings funding, volunteers, and all kinds of sponsorship to neighborhood projects and citywide initiatives.  Once you think about a project and get organized, SJC will help you to launch it.

Just remember though - this is YOUR PROJECT and there is a lot of work to get it ready to go onto our platform.  You need to have a team in place to make it happen and we suggest you take a reality check before, during and even after your project is launched for it to be sustainable.

Two projects launched this week - yeah !! Donations Needed !!

PS #5 Joined SJC's Rain Gardens +ART Campaign to reinvent their school with their Alleviating Stormwater Run-off Project (target $10,060)

SJC collaboration with Bike JC, JC Art School and the City of Jersey City for citywide JC Bike Rack Campaign (target $37,311)

Please support - your project might be next !  The vision we have is that SJC can help build momentum across neighborhoods and the City, for stakeholders to collaborate on making these initiatives successful - do what you can and BE THE CHANGE !!

Help Fight Climate Change In Our Own Community...!

The one thing about climate change we can be sure of, is that we need to act, and at that, act locally...!  Sustainable JC is proud to collaborate with the Sierra Club, and with the Honorable Mayor Steven Fulop, to present ways in which we can act constructively. Come see an episode of the ground-breaking show Years of Living Dangerously, and find out what YOU can do, to change things by acting locally.

Register for the event here.

Heat waves, flooding, storm surges and polar vortexes. New Jersey is experiencing the impacts of climate change now and it’s only going to get worse if we don’t take action to reduce carbon pollution.

Fortunately, the EPA is announcing new limits on the amount of climate disrupting carbon pollution that coal plants are allowed to release into the air! The fossil fuel industry is putting up a lot dirty money to prevent the EPA from doing its job. The only way to fight coal industry opposition and allow the EPA to do its job is to show nationwide support. That means they need YOU! Join the Sierra Club and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, in collaboration with Sustainable Jersey City, to learn how you can support the EPA's new limts on carbon pollution make 2014 a year of climate action!

GMO Labeling Law Pending in New Jersey; Reach Out To JC City Council & State Representatives !

From our friends at FOOD & WATER WATCH, here’s some background on New Jersey's GMO labeling campaign...
While GMO foods are a huge part of the American food supply, GMO foods have not been adequately tested for long-term impacts on humans and environmental health. Without labels, consumers have no idea if the foods they are eating are genetically engineered. Jersey City Council has an opportunity to help make New Jersey just the 4th state to make GMO labeling the law (CT, VT and ME have already passed GMO labeling laws).  By passing a resolution in support of bill # A3192, Jersey City would be calling on their representatives in the New Jersey legislature to pass this urgent bi-partisan legislation, giving consumers the power to decide if they want to eat genetically engineered foods.
AND
Our own City Council and JCEC is considering Resoulution to support this important legislation - please contact your City Council Person and voice your support so they get feedback about where you stand in this matter.
If you wish to send a LETTER to our NJ Assembly and Senate representatives, alerting them to your concerns "with unlabeled, genetically modified foods, and urging them to support A3192, bi-partisan legislation that would give consumers the power to decide if they want to eat genetically engineered foods."
Correspondence can be sent to:
  1. Gina McCarthy, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Ariel Rios Building
1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20460
  2. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, United States Department of Agriculture, 1400 Independence Ave., S.W., Washington, DC 20250

harrisonford-e1396871976456

Climate Mama's website is great tutorial, not only for Parents (Papas too!), on Climate Change Impacts and the related political ping pong game going on with legislators about it, but for all of us.  In addition to being educational, it puts folks in touch with immediate actions they can take when either state bills are being considered or through their extensive partnership network, ways to get more involved if these issues are something you are passionate about.

Find out more about the backstory on Palm Oil by scrolling down to the bottom of this page.  They've partnered with the Rainforest Action Network RAN) to connect the dots for folks, so you understand what's really happening.  RAN's scientists travelled with Harrision Ford in the Showtime documentary 'Years Of Living Dangerously' now airing on Sunday nites at 9pm.  And if you've missed prior episodes, they are all available On Demand on online on the series website.
