Food Waste Recycling Is On My Mind This Earth Week 2014 ~

Lots's of CELEBRATION ENERGY this past week around Earth Day 2014. Will make my observation short and sweet - I observed an EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF STREET LITTER AND FOOD THROWN INTO TRASH BINS as folks gathered consciously to connect about their concerns for the planet.  Leaves me curious.

When folks dump their food scraps into the general waste stream, it makes it's way to a landfill; as does institutional and commercial food waste (schools, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, etc.), unless they have special carting contracts, where this separated waste stream gets brought to a special re-purposing site to be turned into soil amendments, biofuel, etc.  When food waste hits landfills it decomposes and releases dangerous amounts of Methane into our air.  Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that is a major cause of air quality issues, greatly impacting escalating rates of respiratory disease, as well as accelerating climate changes, that are impacting our environment at alarming rates.

This is something we can control as human beings, and in fact, can be an ENGINE IN REVERSE ! IF . . . we move to change our ways a bit.   As individuals, a small effort toward recycling food scraps at home can make a big difference.  More about SJC's Community Composting / Garden Exchange initiative can be found here - http://sustainablejc.org/wordpress/projects/community-composting/

Small Business, Commercial and Institutional Partnership Matters

While urban landscapes are a bit more challenged to re-purpose their food scraps within their footprint, green corriders and open space can become beneficiaries of healthy soil amendments produced and distributed locally, also fueling the local economy by cutting down on costly carting contracts and commercial products, used to remediate / grow the green corriders in all Cities - parks, community gardens, streetscapes, school yards, institutional footprints, etc.  It can even create new green economy jobs, which is what we want right ?  Other Cities are doing this, and while it takes orchestrated change management and lots of community education, Jersey City can do this too.

Oh yes, wanted to mention the relationship between Composting & Stormwater Management.   That is to say, once we have a commitment toward a Green Infrastructure Strategy for Jersey City, we can follow the lead of other urban centers and deploy 'high absorption' , locally grown compost, in our practices to dramatically lower runoff volume and holding capacity in rain gardens, bioswales and other bioretention systems we may install.  Another example of how looking at some of our challenges from a 'whole systems' perspective, gives us the opportunity to solve multiple problems at once.

Years Of Living Dangerously ! James Cameron's Gift, Earth Day 2014.

Director James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar) directs this 9-episode series on the impacts of climate change here in the US and around the globe.  Distinguished narrators take on the topic as an opportunity to educate themselves and others, beyond the rhetoric, about the root causes and the complex interconnections that are driving some very bad decisions. For those who are confused or are sitting on the fence about what you believe or what action, if any, you might want to take, I would highly recommend taking a bit of time to tune in to this intelligent discussion.  However, fair warning . . . is disturbing to watch.  So far, I appreciate most how they are exploring how faithbased communities and individuals who are guided by their religious teachings, are reconciling scientific evidence with their spiritual beliefs.

This is airing on Showtime but each episode can be viewed on the website - www.YearsOfLivingDangerously.com

New U.N. Climate Change Panel Report Released Yesterday - Urgent Action Called For.

I decided to repost Trish Syzmanski's google+ share this morning here on SJC's site, along with the comments I added.   While we've had a lot of this discussion at our meetings over the last couple of years, our blog platform was developed to give community stakeholders a voice and to help share information amongst those focused on transforming Jersey City into a more sustainable place to live and work. So we're inviting you to participate.

If you are interested to blog on our site, please send an email to info@sustainablejc.org - your posts will flow throw to all of our social media sites.

Climate Change Adjustments Must Be Fast And Large, U.N. Panel Says

Deb -

The learning community that Sustainable JC is working to coalesce for Jersey City, is an opportunity for concerned citizens who live and work in this river city, to take up the 'Resiliency Call' and support efforts to plan more sustainably.
Hoboken is on the move and is bringing private, public and philanthropic partnerships together to help fund and execute this award winning plan by OMA http://stupiddope.com/2014/04/11/post-sandy-rehab-oma-plans-a-rebuild-by-design-defense-strategy-for-the-jersey-coastline-video/
They have also completed a Green Infrastructure Strategic Plan (Bravo!) which is what Jersey City needs to do.  ALL new economic dev, real estate dev and RE-development initiatives should be planned with climate change realities in mind.  Other cities are doing this - Jersey City can do this.

SANDY Survey - Hudson Regional Health Commission

Hudson Regional Health Commission asked that we post this message -

  • Superstorm Sandy made landfall on October 29, 2012.  The storm caused unprecedented damage to New Jersey’s housing, business, infrastructure, health and social service and environmental sectors.  After the initial response, there is a long-term need to ensure that the outstanding health, behavioral health, and social services needs of Superstorm Sandy survivors are identified and addressed.

Hudson Regional Health Commission has received a grant to conduct a health and wellbeing needs assessment for residents and business owners in Hudson County affected by Superstorm Sandy.  We feel that many people in Hudson County were affected by the storm to some extent, so we encourage all residents and business owners to complete the short survey. This includes, but is not limited to, those who were victims of flooding, power loss or are experiencing stress from the storm. Through this survey we hope to gain insight on the types of unmet needs that exist in the community.  We will then develop a plan to connect individuals to the services they may need for recovery.

If you are a resident, property or a business owner in Hudson County, your input is very important in order to ensure that any recovery efforts as a result of this survey are directed to all those affected by Superstorm Sandy. Please share your thoughts by completing the following survey: Superstorm Sandy ENGLISH Survey , in Spanish Superstorm Sandy SPANISH Survey (must fax or email to address below)

Please post this Sandy Outreach Flyer and feel free to distribute this email to anyone that may have been affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts and helping us to build a stronger and healthier Hudson County!

    Thank You,

    Christina

In case the endorsements of the US Green Building Council and Eco-Schools USA are not enough, re: boat load of CEU’s available to participants, we have lined up an AMAZING group of instructors, for this groundbreaking course.  Principals of Green Path NJ (John Decina, Karen Huff, Darryl Bowman) and Eco-Schools USA (Jennifer Dowd), along with the Cloud Institute (Jaimie Cloud) and Ramapo College Graduate Sustainability Studies Program (Ashwani Vasishth) and JC’s very own Tom Gibbons (former JCEC Chair), are all coming into this in support of educating stakeholders, to help them take sustainability initiatives forward, either professionally or in their communities.  In my opinion, this is a great opportunity – there I said it.

We will not be offering this course again until next Spring.  Jump on the bus now, gain the knowledge and support provided by this program, and dig in with us.
