Hello Sustainable JC Friends,

As we approach Celebrating Earth Day 2013, SJC has reached another milestone in the launch of this newsletter and the move to our new website platform.  We are very excited about this as we are also unveiling our new logo design, new tools for the community including more resources for your projects and a more integrated social media platform for those wishing to blog through our site.  Thank you for your patience over the next few weeks as we work out the kinks :-)

Last year we celebrated Earth Day 2012 with the launch of a visionary document for Jersey City, the SJC Charter, which was a synthesis of 2 years of input from a broad range of community stakeholders.  A fabulous team of passionados worked on that project together and we celebrate its 1st Anniversary this year.  It is a living document that is meant to evolve over time - if you haven't signed on please feel free to do so here sustainablejc.org/wordpress/charter  The list of signatures keeps growing!!

New Partnerships and Sponsors have been part of our good fortune this year and clearly our focus on developing this Collaborative Network is building momentum, not just for us but for all the folks who have come into our fold.  New event series like SJC Green Drinks + ART and our Certificate Program: Urban Sustainability in Jersey City could not have happened without the combined energies of everyone behind these initiatives, as is the case with our other Educational Outreach and Innovative Project Teams who are developing new programs that bring environmental, social and business solutions together for Jersey City.  While we've peppered this newsletter with some announcements and event details, check out our new website for updates on all that we are up to, including two new teams that are forming - +ART and Greener Buildings.

Thanks to ALL of those participating on making our programs successful.  Collaboration is hard and requires a lot of trust, commitment and integrity to pull off.  It's frankly not for everyone but am so very appreciative that it makes sense to more and more people these days.  Sustainable JC is a catalytic organization and in looking around the city at all the greening projects happening in our neighborhoods and the sustainability focus that many community organizations are now taking on, am proud of the role we played in creating opportunities for everyone to come together and make Jersey City a more sustainable place to live and work.  TOGETHER IS DEFINITELY BETTER !!

Lastly, our organization is growing rapidly and more hands on deck are needed.  Both Volunteers for short-term support and Org Committee Members willing to develop and expand our programming are needed.  We also are expanding our Advisory Board but you should know that it requires you rolling your sleeves if this is of interest !  SJC is a learning community - we don't have all the answers but we have good instincts and a lot of talent coming from very diverse constituencies.  Help us become the best Community Green Team we can be - all collaborators welcome.

Warm regards,

Debra A. Italiano

Urban Farming and Gardening

A small urban garden with an emphasis on small scale food production. Utilizing pots, fence boxes and raised bed, this garden is growing mostly salad items such as chard, kale, herbs, small tomatoes and peppers. The garden has been growing since 2008 and also produces pears and some flowers such as roses, clematis and honeysuckle. A tub garden sometimes produces water lilies
