October 3rd Discussion –

Sustainability 2.0 For Jersey City ?

In 2013 we published a short white paper to help lead JC towards a more sustainable future – this was intended as a simple roadmap to highlight low hanging fruit for the City.  While there has been some activity, we think there’s a whole lot more we could be doing.  But more importantly, what do you think ?

In 2017 our Innovation Office worked hard to bring an awareness campaign called ‘Year Of Water’ to the public, with a focus on Green Infrastructure & Water Conservation.  Next year a similar campaign focused on Energy (Efficiency) is being planned.  These two systems are very connected, and can afford many synergies if integrated steps are taken to leverage and streamline opportunities across the City’s operations.  Waste Streams are also closely associated with these areas.

Challenge Questions –

• How does the City reinvent its own operations ?

• What new partnered commitments need to be in place with Real Estate Development and Commercial Business stakeholders (large economic drivers for JC) toward ramping up goals for a more sustainable and resilient Jersey City?

• Sustainability & Resiliency Planning Strategies must help grow and leverage our local economy (not hold it back) and also be economically feasible.  So how do we implement visionary plans, that support our quality of life now and in the future, and create incentives to those responsible for building the City’s infrastructure ?

In addition to discussing some of the above (big conversation but we only have 2 hours …), we can share more about the field work and projects we’ve been working on these past months.  HINT:  Here are some photos of the new rain garden we just installed with partner NJ Tree Foundation –
